Sports has always been big news in South Africa and we try by all means to stay glued to its transformations. What happened to the good old days when sports news was strictly about sports and nothing else. Caster Semenya is simply and 18 year old athlete trying to make it big. The world and the media took her dream and turned it into a media fiasco. After reading different articles on Semenya it came to my attention that this was actually an invasion of her privacy. No one has the right to question another person about their sex, culture and religion. Running is was Semenya does best and taking that away from her would be very selfish and wrong.
As an eighteen year old she is still trying to find herself and the media has no right to involve themselves in that personal experience. Whether Semenya is a hermorphidite or not is really no-one’s business. Yes we all understand the fact that allowing her to run against athletes would be not only unfair but against the rules as well. There are better ways of handling all situations and this one should have been kept more discreet.
So what happens now? Her poor little future has been invaded by journalists, paper, cameras, fingers and comments. Semenya has not only been stripped from her athletic dreams but also from her life as a teenager. She deserves to live her life in peace and therefore the media should stop publishing this story of her life like it’s a scandal. She has done her country proud and has made it to levels that now teenager has ever gotten, and for that she deserves a round of applause.
